I have five tattoos, and the only thing I regret is that they are no longer on the nice young (slim) body they used to decorate.......

I have two tattoos. I love the one on my stomach, it's my girls names circling my belly button. The other I loved as well, but I had it put in a place that wasn't kosher for work purposes...so had it removed. Regrets no, not about the tattoo, but placement is crucial. It hurt like hell and was very expensive. Not telling where it was...but I have plans for more. My daughter is drawing me a couple to have made.

I've never gotten one, but I've wanted one for a long time. So what's stopped me? They're permanent (sorta) and I want to make sure whatever I decide on has personal meaning for me, and also won't be something I'll regret.

I have ten pieces of ink; you can see one and part of another on my profile picture. No, I did not have any done in places I cannot expose, strictly back (4) upper-arms (2) legs (2) and chest (2).

I have barbed wire, ying-yang dragons, and a reaper with a guitar just to describe a few.

All of my tats are easily covered with everyday clothing. Having always worked in the medical field I had to take care that my tats did not show while wearing scrubs. Mine are a Wolf, two separate crows, a mandala with an owl and mountain scene, and a medicine wheel.

Well, the one I had removed was on my breast, but it showed though white blouses...arggg. My daughter is drawing me a Fairy for my lower back (all sweet and exotic) and if I let you look "real" close, she'll be "flipping" you the "bird"....I have to be a little rebellious, it's my nature, but it's subdued. The other couple I have in mind, while be a "Made in Germany" tag, not sure where, maybe back of neck....????

Hek:

The back of the neck tag would be good. *LOL*

I've often thought of a barcode or the Japanese symbol for "slave" on the back of my neck (since we work like slaves at "the job"). Unfortunately, my hair's so short they'd be visible, and our dress code has a "no visible tattoos" clause in it.

It hurt like HELL had landed on me....and no anesthesia....my back was out for a couple of weeks from being sooooo tence and arched up., I learned my lesson....the lasar was so painful..then they go in again with a white powder to absorb the color (ink) and it took about a year to heal...and that was only the 1st process. Never went back for the 2nd so I still have some scarring, but not too bad. I couldn't imagine going through it again. So, I highly recommend you/anyone seriously think about what where you put it.

deadmen, the closest example to what its like getting one removed is, the sensation of a large rubber band snapping at you, repeatedly. the first few snaps are very uncomfortable but them you 'become' rather numb to it. it also depends on the location. I sure it hurt for hekofawoman b/c it was her boob. everyone also has a different pain threshold to consider. depending on the size to be removed, it usually only takes 5min or less to endure. they dont have 'a skin' anesthesia. but you could apply an ice pack over the area before you do it. also make sure you've eaten and slept well prior. I went in once, kinda hung over from the night before and almost fainted during it! (LOL) not to mention a large area on a sensitve place. the only thing that really hurts is the price. and repeat visits until gone.

All the more reason to NOT get a tat! Ouch!!!

Temporary body art is my style with temporary being the key word. A little baby oil, soap and water and it's gone.

Ahhh I see. Well, I have a really high tolerance for pain but for the time being at least, I can't see getting any of mine removed. I see me getting more, not removing any :-)

My kids are used to the fact that they don't have a soccer mom, my family has more or less given up harrassing me, my husband digs 'em...it's all good in my world.

May I ask what caused you to want to have a tattoo removed? I'm just curious and nosy...

deadmen, I forgot to mention...and what no-one really discusses much of, is the post treatment.. they use a few different lasers over the course b/c each one focuses on certain colors, the 'alex' one is brutal. next day, the skin is all blood blistered and very significantly raised. for about a week you have to be extremely carefull not to 'bump' that area, or else! I have to bath and sleep certain ways because they are so fragile! depending how dark the tattoo is, dictates the # of treatments needed for complete removal. figure the average to be 8-10.and in intervals of 2 months min. between...so at best, it takes almost 2 years! (depending on size) $250 /$350 /$450+ per treatment!

why I am removing some: well it is very unfortunate. (4 yrs ago) I started a 'pec and arm' sleeve that never got finished, 5 months in...the artist closed shop, and @!$%#'n vanished! literally! I later found out he moved back to brazil. all possible contact leads failed. the work is good but I no longer like the direction it has gone in. we really didnt have a plan. I showed the stuff to BOB TYRELL at my local boston convention but he as well as others dont wanna 'pick up, were someone left off'.

Well that clenches it for me - all of my ink stays put.

the artist closed shop, and @!$%#'n vanished!

That completely sucks. I want to have a back piece done and that is one of my worries- that part way through it, the shop will close. Can't blame another artist for not want to pick up and finish someone else's work. Tyrell? Not familiar with his name but where I live, that's not surprising.

deadmen, were do you live? (you dont have to be exact) but perhaps I could mention (if I know) an artist near you that is a big name. do you mind traveling to see someone? bob tyrell is out in detroit, michigan. he specializes in portrait black an grey. he is well known around the world. my advice to you: find an artist that specializes in what your looking for. (black/grey, color, and imagery) believe it or not, but good artists..arnt good at all styles. if you wanna see some "absolutly mind blowing tattooers--go to darkimages.com (they are located over by me..in NYC.) If you decide to get a back piece done...just go to a reputable place..and you should not have to worry about them closing down. keep in mind that for a good artist, the average is $100-$125 per hr. for work thats going to take several visits to complete. figure $3000. or more! (just know what your getting into, and dont try to bargain shop.) however my situation was unordinary!..but hes known around the tattooist community...and maybe I'LL one day bump into him at a convention. (an be like...what the @!$%#, man?)

Deadmen, you are in Boston? Got mine done in Laconia, 12 years ago, dont think they have gone anywhere, have been in business a long time. I get many compliments, still, and I havent exactly been diligent with sunscreen. 5 pieces in the middle of my back, didnt hurt as bad as I expected it to, actually believe having them done helped relieve some back pain I'd had. Gary LaRoche at Old Skool Tattoo, he is probably still the owner, also had some other artists working out of his shop.

Bike week is a blast up there, but you'll pay top dollar then, you may get a better deal if you visit in the winter when it's slow. Anywho, there are a lot of good artists out there who are not so foolish or arrogant to turn down work. they may want to embellish the existing work with their own flair, so being open to that would be wise, imho.

I am in southern New Mexico, Las Cruces. We had one artist here with mad skills. He started right out of high school, was a fantastic artist, no flash, all original work. He got well known, made a small fortune, moved to San Francisco and has made an even greater fortune. He did a incredible cover up of a heart on my arm(yes, with a name in it) and of my original ink blob-butterfly. It is now one big beautiful piece with a sleeping dragon, flowers and vines and a fairy sitting on a leaf.

In a city the size of this, many shops come and go. You find an artist you like, they're never open, always out of town, getting an appointment is a pain. Or worse, you find one you like and next time you go back you find out they got popped for a parole violation and won't be back for a year.

    figure $3000. or more!

I'd guessed it would be somewhere in that ballpark. I have a vague image in my head of what I want, a tree of life but I've known it'd be something to save up for having done so I haven't gone very far in getting it designed/priced out.

I havent exactly been diligent with sunscreen.

I'm terrible about it. I like my sunshine and I do live in the desert. My are holding up well.

Bike week is a blast up there, but you'll pay top dollar then, you may get a better deal if you visit in the winter when it's slow

Prices at any bike event are always sky high it seems. I know prices were pretty jacked at the Harley swap meets in LA. I used to watch them work but never got any done there.

so being open to that would be wise, imho.

    I agree.

deadmen, well...there is a shop in the southern part of arizona, an also in neighboring texas. I cant think 'off-the-top' what the name is but they have some really good people there. you'll also have to book an appoint. WAY in advance. later on when I have more time I'll try to get the names of the place. (for ya!)

Oops, xrayman is in Boston? Sorry bout that mix-up. A friend of mine had an awesome cover-up piece done by Gary, and Laconia/Lake Winnepesaukee area is fun and beautiful, a do-able day trip from BOS or better yet a weekend, catch some live music at Stone Coast Brewery, some great beer too.

Deadmen, you like your sunshine, so NH in winter may not be your thing, lol.

Ha ha, my first exposure to bike week was when I was about eleven or twelve, my parents took us to Weirs Beach Waterslide not having any idea that it was bike week. My mom was horrified, but we (us kids) thought it was pretty cool, we certainly got an eyeful!

My tats are on lower right arm -- panther head with dagger -- and upper left arm -- rose and snake -- both symbols of return from death and put on for a specific reason which no longer exists.

Have to be careful and age appropriate when explaining them to the Granddaughters though.

Several, all of which are in the process of being reworked right now. Not covered but updated and recolored. The new inks, needles and artists seem to have really revolutionized the field in the last 10 years.

I work in an office environment and have never had any grief over any of my body art, or felt like I was excluded from anything in life. I fail to see how any harm can come out of getting one these days as long as you go to a reputable shop and make sure the equipment is clean.

Other than that I have a couple personal rules: no women or band names and nothing on the face, neck or hands. It has worked great for me!

I worked in a state office for a very short time, and everyone there had tat's and were not shy about showing them. My tattoos are somewhat ethnic, and when I wore a short sleeved blouse one day (in AUGUST) I was told to cover the single tat that was showing. Needless to say there was union intervention, and a formal apology made to me. It was not enough, the manager retaliated with shift changes and poor attitude until I quit in a huff.

I don't have any tattoos. I have large ugly scars all over my gut. I have one that runs from my pelvic bone to a few inches below my Ziphoid tip (the bone at the bottom where the two sides of the rib cages meet). I have considered getting a tattoo of a Zipper put on it, because of how many times the doctors have opened it up. Yet, I am not sure anyone other then me or the Doctors would get the joke.

I meant the zipper tat. the scar is there and folks will look; why not make light of it and break the ice?

I move sometimes oddly because of injuries and Parkinson's and rather than have folks and kids be put off and feel bad about looking I greet the with: I promise I drive better than I walk.

absolutly.. both arms from wrist to shoulders, 2 on my neck and a small tear drop. i do not regret any of the tats in particular, except maybe the tear drop. started getting them in the navy and they all tell the story of some period of my life. i do regret the placement and number of them. when i was in good physical shape, none of them mattered, but as i got older and needed to have less physically demanding jobs, it was tough, very few business wanted me to represent them. the tear drop was an impulive act after one of my kids was the victim of a crime. i fully intended to end the man's life and figured it was better than getting it in prison. although i did not follow through, and the man is now in prison himself, people that do not know me, just assume i am a dangerous ex-con or something. i am really a pretty nice guy.

I've never had a tattoo. My mother advised me against them.

She's a retired nurse so she's seen a lot of naked bodies. She says that when a person gets older, the skin sags so much that you can't even tell what the tattoo is anymore.

LOL. I like tattoos on other people but I figure I'm looking older every day as it is. I don't need a tattoo to remind me how old I am.

Of course, there's a lot to be said for having fun regardless of your age!

You could wait until you're old and saggy, then get a tat that looks good on old and saggy! Maybe one of those sharpei dogs?

I don't have any tatoos either Susan, and WordPerS, I don't think I'll take your advice, but thanks. I may be old, but I prefer golden, if you don't mind.

My 22 year old daughter has lots of tatoos. She has a nice big one of one her (many) boyfriends on her right leg. It is about 8" and very black. Hmm, I wonder how her new BF feels about that?

My parents always told me not to do anything I might regret later. Of course, I didn't always follow that rule (had a little fun in life). I think tatoos are an individual decision. If you want one, that's fine and if you don't, that's fine too.

LOL! I had a roommate when I was in the Marines and she got a panther tattooed on her boob. Well, she got pregnant and the boob grew and then it got saggy and the panther went from roaring to looking like it was old and toothless.

I have no tattoos or piercings. My son had several during his Army years. My husband had some hand made at an early age.

The only one, I regret is my husband's last one that he got against my wishes to cover up some of the sad looking ones. He did it when we were split up for 6 weeks during a tumultuous time in our marriage. It is supposed to be cougar, but looks like a mad dog. I'm pretty sure that was his attitude showing during that time.

I have forgiven him, but never look at it, as it reminds me of sad times. He never wanted me to get a tattoo, as he said I would be a marked woman. I've thought of getting one that he dislikes in a place he would not approve of. Just joking!

Ya... I'm a little confused as well. It's one thing if he had the tattooes before you were together and you don't like them, but this seems like a double-standard. And how does that make you a "marked woman" other than the obvious you'll have colorful markings on you. lol

i regret one but thats because the artist was very untalented and gave me a straight-lined band over my ankle, when ankle bands should never be straight because your ankles are never straight! flexing and extending is what ankles are supposed to do, but tats arent, so it looks distored unless i am just laying there motionless. @!$%#! i didnt realize that myself, until it was done, but a talented artist will know human anatomy and be able to tell you what should and shouldnt go where, and why, and suggest something different if you bring in a pic and choose a spot thats inappropriate.

i have another one that i cant see, which is much better quality and i am fine with it.

I have 10 of them - shoulders forearm, wrists/back of my hands, calf, ankle...

I've had some reworked over the years, made a mistake or two when I was younger, they're beautiful now though and no regrets. I've had my nose pierced for almost 20 yrs now, don't regret that either. My kids ask about getting ink when they turn 18 and I say I wish they'd wait until they are 25 and get them then if they still want them but eh, I got my 1st one the day I turned 18, I can't say much if they do it, too.

My dad used to ask me what I was going to look like when I turned 70 or 80 and was a little old lady covered in ink. My answer always has been that I will look wrinkled and ugly, same as I would without tattoos - but at least I'll look like I had a good time while I could :-)~

p.s. i did sign for my oldest, at the time 17 to get a religious tat on his shoulder. i knew he would do it anyway, he lived with his mom and she wasn't very authoritative, and i did not want him to risk illness in a parlor that would have done it w/o consent. he hasn't gotten another since, but it is his body and decision. i do find myself thinking more, some times for a year or more about my next one, i got sick of the "re-work" when my life or outlooks changed.

i never said i was happy about it. i would never tell him i was happy he hadn't got more, that would almost assure he would. ancient cultures used tattoos to remember their histories and the histories of their communities. it is just another form of expression. at least in my view. unfortunately, and obviously i don't care much, people judge based on things like this. they assume you are a certain type of person. one of the good things i have found about my tats is it weeds out the judgemental tight asses that i wouldn't want in my life anyway.

I'd say that's pretty good advice. I didn't get mine until I was 27. By then, I knew who I was, and understood a little better just what it meant to have something "permanent" done to my body. It's been almost ten years since I got that first one and I'm just now finally ready for my second.

Amen to that. I know people judge me...let them. I love to dress up, let my ink show and then dazzle people with my bright charming smile and impeccable manners! Ok, well, maybe I don't take it that far but you know what I mean.

I was 19 when I got my first two. I had wanted tattoos since I was about 12 years old. My taste changed when I grew up but when I finally got my first one it meant something special to me. My second one has less meaning but it is a symbol from a culture that I have loved to study since I was very young. My third one has my hubby's last name under butterfly wings. I just recently added a flower for each of our two sons on each side of the butterfly.

When people see that I have a lower back tattoo they automatically say "tramp stamp". I was smart in placing my tattoos, none are seen when I am dressed at work and they never will be unless I decide to work somewhere like a strip club. I also didn't get my tattoos for other people to see, I got them for me. They represent things I love.

I have a tat on my lower back. It's a celtic vine design called "Girlie Bits" and I love it. I was 30 when I got it and put a lot of thought in what design I chose. I bought the design from an awesome tattoo artist named Pat Fish in Californinia. Her site is luckyfishart.com and she specializes in celtic designs.

I want to get another tattoo someday.

I have three tattoos, and I only regret one of them. On my right ankle is my first and most loved, done at Miller Cotton in Tyler, TX. The artist hand drew an ankle bracelet, including the 3 charms, the links of the bracelet, the catch, and a little bit of chain haning down from the catch. That is a truly lovely piece of work, and to this day, I have folks ask where I bought my ankle bracelet - until they look closer and see that it's actually a tattoo. I have a simple Gemini sign (it looks like the Roman numeral II) done on my left lateral calf. The one that I regret is what was supposed to be a multi-colored yin-yang sign. Not only has the ink faded, but even the black ink is fading (and I've only had it for 5 years - the same amount of time as my ankle bracelet and Gemini sign, and they were obviously better quality), but the whole thing looks like an odd scar on the inside of my left ankle. I have to get that one covered up/remade into something else....

UUUH, come-on! some people tattoo there whole body, penis, inside lips, ect..its not that bad!! besides after a few minutes of the machine buzzing around...your endorphins kick-in and you become 'numb-to-it". the needles only penitrate through the shin--the thickness of a nail. I dont have single tattoos to count, they are arm and leg sleeves..and ive always had to sit for HOURS!---people have different pain thresholds, and im no-macho-man!

I just hate when people tell you that tattooes don't hurt at all. Really? Being stabbed thousands of times with a needle, then pouring ink into the open wound?? Whatever. lol xrayman... you are the first to NOT try and seem like a big tough guy with their tattooes. and I thank you for that lol

I hate being asked if they hurt. Or better yet, sometimes I put glitter on my dragon and fairy and people will ask if it is a special kind of ink. Umm yes, injecting glitter into your skin, it's the latest rage..

                  I'd never say it doesn't hurt, it does. But compared to childbirth? Getting ink is a piece of cake ;-}

You know this from experience.. I thought you were a man?

Or do you remember being born?

I heard a women try to help a man understand what childbirth feels like,

"Firmly grab your upper Lip with both hands.... now pull it over your head." :) can we say, ouch!

36.5 hours of hard labor with my 1st child. I know what I say when I say by comparison a tattoo is a piece of cake!

The pulling your lip over your head analogy is pretty damn close. Yes, OUCH.

Carol Burnett once described childbirth like pulling your lip over a manhole cover. It was a great skit.

I have five tats and as long as I can watch they really didn't hurt. My tattoos took a minimum of four hours. The largest one was a total of 12 hours to complete. Of course I think there are some areas on the body that would be much more painful, and if I couldn't have watched each one, it would have hurt more.

Being stabbed thousands of times with a needle, then pouring ink into the open wound??

ruthless, (no offence) you really have it all wrong. the needles are vibrating up&down so fast, an only penitrating about the thinkness of your finger nail. at times it feels like a scratching sensation. if its your first time, the artist may do a test run, so that you can become acquainted with it. (because you have to remain completley still!) there are times were its tender, were your like 'OW'. you dont feel ink going in. the easiest places to have one put on is: upper arms, sides of the lower legs. most sensitive: neck, stomach, inside upper arm (near armpit). to name a few. some steps to make it go smoothly: eat & sleep well prior, most important be relaxed. an perhaps dont "stare" at what their doin'. (as that might, bring-on-the-nerves!) most.. if not all, reputable places WILL NOT tattoo you, if you've been drink'n prior. as this only thins your blood, making you bleed which makes it difficult for the ink to stay put! not to mention your ability to remain still!. (although you may bleed some its really nothing.) take a valume or something if you need to relax.

if that is whats keeping you from getting one...your really miss'n out! its like 'food that looks worse than it tastes'! IMO, if your waiting 'for the right, meaningful think you may end up never getting one. none of my tattoos mean anything to me--just like the artwork and people that tattoo me, like Joe Capobianco!

LOL...that comment made me think of the hugely muscular guys with tribal tattoos I see, at my gym! they look intimidating and mean , but most are really the opposite.

ruthless, I agree.. I think that those types of tattoos are such a big waste of space!, considering that they had the potential for using the area on something more elaborate.

when I was around 18, I completely despised tattoos. (glad I didnt start tattoos untill I was 27! otherwise I'd prob. have a lot of '@!$%#' on me!) I think a big part of my opinions was because most stuff I'd seen on people, were just flat out... garbage! tattooing in just the past ten years have been revolutionized. the 'molds' have been broken compared to styles & approach from say...20 years ago. for example, people chose to 'sleeve' a particular body part--going BIG and taking full use of a body part,(with one theme/idea) makes for a more impressive and elaborate piece.

btw, you look'n to get one?

I only have one right now. It is a fairy, sitting on a flower on my lower back. The person who did it was obviously not very experienced. I really need to get it fixed. I want to get a couple of more.

One of my friends husbands has his kids names on his arm. One way it says "Ayden" and when he turns his arm, it says "Cyena." It is a really cool tat.

I think kids' names are one thing and not at all the same as a partner's name. My ex husband had a symbolic piece done that was his and our son's zodiac signs woven in with the birth-month flower of our daughter. One of mine is a hummingbird in memory of my mom...they all have stories and reasons and memories.

I only wanted one little tattoo when I started. Just a small flutterbye. The lady that did it had a lead hand and a foul temper and it sucked, could never tell what it was. It is now a fairy sitting on a flower beside my baby sleeping dragon. Just one, I only wanted one...LOL

My advise to anyone getting a tat.... RESEARCH your artist! This is permanent art it aint goin' away so make sure the artist is someone who does work that you appreciate and does ORIGINAL art. I would never chose a picture out of a book to have tatted to me. My inks are all original not on any other person; I described what I wanted to my artist and she spent time drawing out several for me to choose from; I then was afforded the pleasure of watching her shred the paper art. She does have photos of the finished work that is in her portfolio. Her portfolio has no duplicates in it, everything she does is original.

Get a false tat if you can, I've given them and always recommend it. Like a new pair of shoes, see how it feels walking around with it for awhile.

If you don't like it wash it off. If you like it or just want to tweak the design, then you still have the option to do so.

have a mean looking wolf on my left shoulder, it covered up my 1st wife's name, at the time i said i covered her name with her face..over it now, but still am a wolf fan.
below that is a portrait of my current wife, thought i would have learned my lesson the 1st time.
inside of my left elbow is a bear head, mouth wide open, i just liked the way it looked.
left forearm from elbow to wrist is a eagle perched on a rock. i had some tats done early in life that needed covering, and i loved the bold look of the bald eagle, was an original drawing by the artist.
inside forearm on left, is a stripper on a vicious looking snake, got this during my bouncer days at the club, has the look of a drawing more than a tat. same size as the eagle.
right shoulder, indian squaw with fighting knives, i am 1/3 indian and am into indian art.
just below that at my elbow is a grim reaper with "Mark 9:42" written under it, i got this the day after my son's molester confessed, look up the passage and you will understand.
right forearm are 2 dreamcatcher's the 1st was my 1st tat, the other is more current, like i said, indian spirituality
inside right forearm from elbow to wrist is a dagger, with banner wrapped around it, all 4 of my kids names are on it. self explainitory.
left side neck is a cross with memory of mom on it, don't really know what i was thinking.
left side neck, an eagle with banner, "liberty or death". got this one right after boot camp, we all did. and as stated b4 the tear drop under left eye.

I would like to take back the tear drop & cross on my neck, but the ones i really disliked later in life are covered.

I have a small cross that I traced from a necklace given to me by my grandmother's sister. After my grandma died unexpectedly her sister tried to lessen the pain by treating me like a granddaughter.

My ankh is the same style as my cross and I got it because I have been in love with Ancient Egyptian history for as long as I can remember.

My butterfly with my hubby's last name is because I wanted something I could add to later after we had more kids. I now added a flower to each side of the butterfly. November for our oldest and May for our youngest. I know I want to add more to it but not sure what yet.

What was it about those images that made you decide you wanted to get them?

I knew from the time I was a real little kid that I wanted tattoos. My grandmother had my Papa's name on her arm, had it done in the 1940's...I always thought that was just the coolest thing ever. My first few weren't given much thought and later had to be remade.

After my mom died, I recalled all the times I'd told her she should get a hummingbird tattoo and she always said, "No, you get one for me" ... about a year after she died, I did. From that point on, ink took on a new meaning and each piece marks something...a person, event, road trips, stages of life.

Pentacle - that which is sacred. "Well behaved women rarely make history" banner - My birthday gift from hubby last year. :-) Laugh Now Cry Later Masks - Done on Canal Street on a road trip and wild night out with my husband. (He has an almost matching one.) Sunset with hearts - our 1 yr anniversary. Dragon - knowledge and since I have much to learn, my dragon is a sleeping baby; also covers up a really tacky heart with a name through it. Fairy - nature and playfulness, reminder to myself; covers my original screwed up flutterbye. Butterfly woman - Encompases sun moon ocean - 35th bday gift and cover up of Tiggr done on my 25th bday. Duck on a pond - me, the year I was reborn and set free from many things holding me down in life. Not finished yet. Dios de los muertas(sp?) My beautiful Day of the Dead Lady - acknowledging the power death has over life and what we can survive. Tribute to my ancestors. TCB over a lightening bolt - reminder of a road trip stop with my best buddy at Graceland when I was 20...

                        How's that for some meanings?
